“You can plan for things, work towards them for years, and yet they never materialize. Or you can just happen to be in the right place at the right moment, and everything falls into place. If you want to believe in something like Fate, she’s a capricious character. Sometimes she stands there blocking the doorway you were born to pass through, and sometimes she takes you by the hand and leads you through the minute you poke your nose out. And the stars gaze down and keep their counsel.”
- John Ajvide Lindqvist, Little Star

Did you know that, to this country’s politicians, the only thing that matters is money? With money you buy power.

Trash (2014), dir. Stephen Daldry

I read the book (reviewed here) and I hope the movie keeps the focus on the kids and Wagner Moura’s character. lol at Rooney “Tiger Lily” Mara playing the character that’s much more wide-eyed whitesavior than the priest Martin Sheen will play. The Brazilian cast seems to fit the roles, but I wish that they kept the Philippines setting. The production might cite various logistical concerns, but the Philippines could have used that money (if it could have gone past officials’ pockets) even if it centers on the popular negative image of the trash mountains. Filipinos could have played the young leads, which could have brought great opportunities especially if they weren’t actors before, like some of the kids here. Even if there were practical production reasons, it feels like this Western production feels it’s so easy to exchange one predominantly Catholic (All Soul’s Day is a plot-important event) country with high levels of corruption and poverty for another.

Hey, so, uh. I’m deaf. They deafened me. I’m deaf and we need to talk. So… So I’m gonna sign what I have to say. I need the practice and I’m not gonna hide anymore. Barney’ll translate. It’ll be okay. Okay? Okay.
