-nods- According to his prologue, human Hal was raised by six prostitutes, and considered them all his mothers. He saw them abused by patrons, and stayed long enough to bury them all.
This is especially interesting given how, after becoming a vampire, he had major problems with attacking women- a tendency he tried to control after going dry in 1955. The writers could explore how Hal feels about becoming someone who mistreated women in ways similar to how other men mistreated his mothers.
His insistence on literacy, domestic settings, and being a gentleman could also come from being brothel-born. He might have wanted to rise above his circumstances, and/or his mothers might have taught him how to respect ladies and grab any education he could find.
